The three muscle groups, the external obliques, the rectus abdominis and the internal obliques comprise the abdominals. Most body builders know, even if on just a subconscious level, that the workouts they do to build their abs should consist of Cardio workouts and the resistance-type weight lifting to work all of the muscles groups at one time. This is because all of them are connected and interconnected and you will not build one group in isolation from all of the others.
The three muscles groups, listed above, are all the truth about abs located below a layer, or two, of fat and they must be uncovered before they can be toned up. The cardiovascular exercises are those that will help shed the fat from these areas. Mike Geary, the author of the Truth About Abs provides a formula in his best selling book: fats (the right kind) + muscle tissues (present and built up by you) = perfect six-pack abs.
By exercising in the correct way, you are building the lean muscle mass that would otherwise, simply be turned into fat.
